A weekend in my grandfather’s art studio, sorting through his sketches and paintings. Then straight into the first three days of my Family Constellations Foundation Year training in Bristol. What emerged in that room, particularly around my father’s line and the indigenous people his ancestors displaced in 1800s America, was more humbling than I anticipated.

This note is a reflection on what it means to be the first generation willing to look. And a question for you: how much do you know about where you come from?

It felt like the right moment to finally bring my voice into this space.

I talk about what it means to be in weekly therapy as a mother in the early years. About the exhaustion that makes everything hit differently. About the two years of attachment work that have opened something up for me, a window into my mother line. And about how hearing my mother’s story recently felt like listening to the one I used to tell myself.

This is the beginning of more. Voice notes to sit alongside the essays. A way for us to find each other in the in-between.

I’d love to hear whether you’re in therapy or not. What you’re reaching for in these days of mothering to support you as you emerge a new and of course, whether what you choose is sustaining you.
